Personal Computer SecurityWelcome to Personal Computer Security by the Sunshadowz Team. We appreciate you dropping by. This site is dedicated to answering common questions and concerns related to small business and home computer security plus a lot more. The most common question is "how can I secure my computer, my accounts, my passwords, my data and my family online? We have created this website in order to share some safe surfing and computer internet security tips with you. The security tips found on this site are basically for people using Windows as their operating system although there are some articles that cover security basics that everyone should know regardless of operating system preference. We will explain the BASICS in computer security products such as Firewalls, Anti Virus software, Intrusion Detection, Spyware Removal Appz and Encryption. We really hope that this site benefits all visitors regardless of expertise and explains security tools available in a simplified manner. However, our primary goal is to deliver an easy to follow knowledge base for novice users who may be a little more vulnerable online. The Internet is quite an amazing vast source of information so we believe that all people should benefit from it. However, street smarts or surf smarts rather are just as important while surfing online. The same precautions you take in every day life, from locking your house and car to looking both ways before crossing the street applies on the Internet as well. As long as you are aware of possible risks then you can adequately prepare yourself. One thing is certain that the only way to be 100% risk free on the Internet is to never log on, however, what fun would that be? We appreciate having information at our fingertips which the Internet provides and we want you all to enjoy the ride. Our mission with this site is to explain topics in plain English and attempt to point you in the right direction. We have so much fun experimenting with new security tools but like any new software that you add to your system, there is a BIG RISK that it may conflict with another piece of software that is already installed. Our advice is "BEWARE". If you're new to computers, thoroughly read the system requirements and make your own judgement call on whether you think that this new piece of software will be a good fit. If you are really unsure, contact your computer vendor. Some products that we will be discussing should be considered essential where others may be just interesting to experiment with. Our belief with regards to securing our own computers is the layer approach. We don't believe in relying on only one product to protect our computers, privacy and data. At the very least, a firewall and antivirus software products are essential layers in your protection planning. It might sound like a lot of extra work and perhaps confusing in the beginning but it's well worth the time and effort if you avoid even one security attack. Once you have installed these products, you are also responsible for updating this software with any future releases. If you are a Windows user, it is also essential to visit the windows update page on a regular basis to check for critical patches for your particular operating system. Critical patches are new software releases that Microsoft posts on their site for users to download free of charge to secure any vulnerabilities and fix any bugs that have been discovered. If you use another operating system, you should also make sure your patches are up to date. Another point that we would like to mention is that you are much more vulnerable to attacks online when you use the most popular software. You should diversify your software whenever possible. It just boils down to the fact that attackers can be more triumphant in their victory by targeting software used by a higher percentage of the user population. We will be updating this site regularly with new articles so visit often. The article link is conveniently located to your right along with "Freebies" security tool information. Check out and Sign our new guest book at Squidoo.com. Please use this site at your own risk and discretion, we hope that you find the information helpful. We also encourage you to read our terms and conditions for use of this site as well as every site you visit, ESPECIALLY when downloading products. Try a free virus scan to start you off in the right direction. Aloha, until next time....Live to Surf...Safely The Sunshadowz Team
