Spyware, what is it and should you be worried?Spyware is a general term for any program that is installed on to a computer usually without knowledge by the computer owner. It started out as advertising supported software but has grown in to a much bigger monster as the Internet has evolved. Initially developed to help pay for free distributed software by bundling the advertising within the software, it is now used, in more malicious ways. You can even get spyware or tracking cookies dropped in your system by visiting certain websites. Keep your security patches up to date to help prevent this. Although, there are certain companies still only after web surfing demographics such as favourite sites visited and spending habits, there are others after user names, passwords, credit card numbers, addresses and social insurance/security numbers that may be stored on your computer. In some cases, consent is given unbeknownst to the user if they don't read the fine print in the end-user license agreement when downloading some products. Spyware is often bundled in popular file sharing software used for downloading music.
The most important issue with spyware is the theft of personal information, which could result in detrimental consequences. Next time you download a freebie, read the end-user license agreement very carefully. Then, decide on your own what the real costs of this software could be. There are many free spyware scans and removal tools found on the Internet which respectfully remove a great deal of the spyware found. There are also vendors who sell their spyware removal appz for your personal or business needs. There are also a few vendors that claim to stop spyware before it even enters your PC working in much the same way as a firewall with a spyware detection alert. Caution to users of peer to peer networking or file sharing programs...Some files may be difficult to remove if they were bundled within a software program as these spyware files are often intertwined with the program itself. Usually these sorts of programs must be uninstalled as a whole or they won't work or uninstall properly later on. Make sure you read the minimum requirements before attempting to install any new software on your computer. This practice may save you a few headaches in the long run. In conclusion, keep an eye on the fine print in those end-user license agreements that we're all so quick to click away without reading. Top |
